Warsaw's Old Town was inscribed on the UNESCO list in 1980, but not so much for its historic value, but as an example of a particularly carefully carried out reconstruction of a place almost completely destroyed during World War II.
This reconstruction was based on historical and conservation research and, among other things, paintings by Canaletto.
